Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Virtual Reality (VR)
At Curio, we use AI carefully and intentionally to make immersive learning more helpful, more accessible, and more engaging for students and educators.
- We do not believe AI is a panacea for every challenge in education.
- We do not believe VR is a complete solution on its own.
- But when used thoughtfully together, AI and VR can create more powerful, accessible, and engaging learning experiences.
Why AI Helps VR And Why VR Helps AI
Virtual reality without intelligent guidance can feel impressive at first, but limited over time.
A student may be able to explore ancient Rome, conduct experiments in a chemistry lab, or stand inside a geometric proof in 3D — but eventually they will have questions.
“What am I looking at?”
“Why did this happen?”
“What did I do wrong?”
“What should I try next?”
That’s where AI can help.
AI allows immersive environments to become interactive learning experiences instead of passive experiences. Students can ask questions naturally, receive guidance in real time, and get help while they are actively learning inside the environment itself.
At the same time, AI by itself lacks engagement. Typing back and forth with an AI chatbot is boring and uninspiring.
And how is a student supposed to type a geometry or chemistry problem into a chatbot anyway? These subjects are visual and three-dimensional—not just text on a two-dimensional screen.
The addition of VR fixes all of that. Instead of asking questions about a science experiment, students can stand inside the experiment. Instead of describing a geometry problem through text, they can manipulate shapes and objects directly in 3D space. Instead of reading about concepts abstractly, they can experience them spatially and interactively.
We believe the future of learning combines immersive environments with intelligent assistance, bringing together the strengths of both VR and AI.
How We Use AI for Learners
Curio uses AI primarily through our Study Buddy.
The Study Buddy acts like an intelligent tutor, guide, and/or learning companion inside virtual reality experiences.
Students can ask questions naturally while learning, receive explanations, get guidance when stuck, and work through concepts interactively instead of simply searching for answers online.
Our Study Buddy can:
- Answer student questions
- Guide learners through activities
- Provide tutoring support
- Help explain mistakes
- Encourage exploration and curiosity
- Support independent learning and review
Because students are already inside immersive environments, conversations become more contextual and meaningful than with traditional chat interfaces.

How We Use AI for Educators
In Curio’s web dashboard, educators can review student usage, participation, and learning progress. We use AI to generate some of the reports educators have asked for, including summaries of an individual student’s conversations with the Study Buddy and class-wide summaries showing how students engaged with a particular learning objective, activity, or assignment.
Without AI, educators would have to read through every back-and-forth transcript to understand what students said, where they struggled, and what they learned. AI saves educators time by analyzing large amounts of student interaction data, identifying meaningful patterns, and surfacing insights that might otherwise be difficult (or impossible) to find.
Our Philosophy
At Curio, we use artificial intelligence carefully, responsibly, and with a clear educational purpose.
